About NSS

The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a Central Sector Scheme of Government of India, Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports. It provides opportunity to the student youth of 11th & 12th Class of schools at +2 Board level and student youth of Technical Institution, Graduate & Post Graduate at colleges and University level of India to take part in various government led community service activities & programmes. The sole aim of the NSS is to provide hands on experience to young students in delivering community service. Since inception of the NSS in the year 1969, the number of students strength increased from 40,000 to over 3.8 million up to the end of March 2018 students in various universities, colleges and Institutions of higher learning have volunteered to take part in various community service programmes.

Vision

The vision is to build the youth with the mind and spirit to serve the society and work for the social uplift of the down-trodden masses of our nation as a movement.

Mission

The National Service Scheme has been functioning with the motto “NOT ME BUT YOU” in view of making the youth inspired in service of the people and hence NSS Aims Education through Community Service and Community Service through Education.

NSS Seven Day Special Camp Report - 2023

National Service Scheme (NSS) Cell’s Unit 1 and Unit 2 of K.
Ramakrishnan College of Technology, Samayapuram, Trichy conducted a
seven-day National Service Scheme Special Camp on the theme “Youth in
Swachhta Service”. On this programme totally 100 NSS volunteers serviced
during the 7 day- Special Camp.

NSS Seven Day Special Camp Report

National Service Scheme (NSS) Cell’s Unit 1 and Unit 2 of K. Ramakrishnan
College of Technology, Samayapuram, Trichy conducted a seven-day National
Service Scheme Special Camp on the theme “Youth in Swachhta Service”. On this
programme totally 100 NSS volunteers serviced during the 7 day- Special Camp.

The main objectives of National Service Scheme (NSS) are:

  •  Understand the community in which they work
  •  Understand themselves in relation to their community
  •  Identify the needs and problems of the community and involve them in problem-solving
  •  Develop among themselves a sense of social and civic responsibility
  •  Utilise their knowledge in finding practical solutions to individual and community problems
  •  Develop competence required for group-living and sharing of responsibilities
  •  Gain skills in mobilising community participation
  •  Acquire leadership qualities and democratic attitudes
  •  Develop capacity to meet emergencies and natural disasters and
  •  Practise national integration and social harmony

The Motto of NSS:

  • “Not Me But You”, reflects the essence of democratic living and upholds the need for self-less service. NSS helps the students development & appreciation to other person’s point of view and also show consideration towards other living beings.

NSS Logo:

The logo for the NSS has been based on the giant Rath Wheel of the world famous Konark Sun Temple (The Black Pagoda) situated in Orissa, India. The Red & Blue colors contained in the logo motivate the NSS Volunteers to be active & energetic for the nation-building social activities. The wheel portrays the cycle of creation, preservation and release and signifies the movement in life across time and space, The wheel thus stands for continuity as well as change and implies the continuous striving of NSS for social

NSS Badge:

The NSS logo is embossed on the badge of NSS. The eight bars in the wheel of NSS logo represent the 24 hours of a day. The red colour indicates that the volunteer is full of young blood that is lively, active, energetic and full of high spirit. The navy blue colour indicates the cosmos of which the NSS is tiny part, ready to contribute its share for the welfare of the mankind.

NSS Day :-

NSS was formally launched on 24th September, 1969, the birth centenary year of the Father of the Nation. Therefore, 24 September is celebrated every year as NSS Day with appropriate programmes and activities. NSS Song:- During Silver Jubilee Year the NSS theme song ha s been composed. All NSS volunteers are expected to learn the theme song and sing the song during NSS programmes and celebrations. The theme song cassette is available and the theme song is given in the end of the Manual.

Regular activities of National Service Scheme :-

Regular activities includes functional literacy and non formal education, plantation, preservation and up keeping of trees, construction and repair of roads, cleaning of village ponds and wells, construction and laying of parks, health education and primary health care, first aid awareness, blood donation, anti drug addiction drives, AIDS awareness, advocating advanced agricultural practice, disaster management (Cyclones, floods, earth-quakes, drought), women empowerment, road safety, socio-economic surveys, improvement of campus etc.

Special Camping programme

“Themes” for the Special Camp are the following:-
(1) Health
(2) Environment
(3) Rural Development
(4) Skill acquisition
(5) Value Education.
The primary objectives of the special camping programmes are:-
(i) Making education more relevant to the present situation to meet the felt needs of the communities and supplement the education of university/college/school students by bringing them face to face with the community situation.
(ii) To provide opportunities to NSS Volunteers to play their due roles in the implementation of various development "programmes by planning and executing development projects, which not only help in creating durable community assets in
rural areas and slums but also result in improvement of the condition of weaker sections of the communities.
(iii) Encouraging the students and non-students youth to work along with the adults in rural areas, thereby developing their character, social consciousness and commitment, discipline and healthy and helpful attitudes towards the community:
(iv) Building up potential youth leaders by exploring the latent potential among the campers, both students as well as local youth (rural and urban), with a view to involve them more intimately in development projects for longer periods. The local
leadership generated during the camps would also be useful in ensuring proper maintenance of the assets created as a result of the camps.
(v) Emphasizing the dignity of labour and self-help and the need for combining physical work with intellectual pursuits, and
(vi) Encouraging youth to participate enthusiastically in the process of national development, and promote national integration through democratic living and cooperative action.
